Phone setup — install before you fly

Your phone is your wallet, map, translator and metro card in Shenzhen. But the Great Firewall blocks the app stores and VPN sites the moment you land — so every app here must be downloaded, logged in and tested on home WiFi in Italy. Tap any app to open its step-by-step setup.

🧱 Do it all before departure. Once on a Chinese network you can't install Google apps, WhatsApp, Instagram, or a new VPN. A travel eSIM fixes this for your phone's data (it roams out through Hong Kong/Singapore, so Google & WhatsApp just work) — but hotel WiFi stays firewalled, which is why you also carry a VPN.
